A Few Simple Ways to Save Electricity

With the price of energy drastically on the increase, it is worthwhile to know how to save power with everyday appliances in our homes.

A list of appliances you can save power on..

Turn the monitor off even if you are just away for one minute. This will have an noticeable impact on electricity consumption, the degree to which depends on what type of monitor you use.  Older style CRT monitors use more energy than newer LCD flat screen monitors. Keep both the monitor and the Computer switched off when you are not using them at home or even at the office to maximise energy savings.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are far more energy friendly than incandescent light bulbs. CFL bulbs can sometimes be a little more expensive but they last longer & use less electricity. It is much more cost-effective in the long run to use CFL bulbs.

Air Conditioner

Set the air conditioner at the most comfortable temperatures. Avoid setting it too high or too low. Having a comfortable temperature will save electricity. Also try and spare the usage if it is not essential. Often we can do with a degree or two more without breaking a sweat.

Washing Machines

Try use the washing machine less, and when you do, make sure it’s a full load to get the most out of every wash.

Switch off the TV properly when you are not using it.  A common function is for the TV to go into standby mode, which is still using electricity and can be switched off to maximise savings.

Geysers & Solar Geysers

Always turn the geyser thermostat to the minimum heat neccessary. Avoid setting the thermostat to a very high temperature or heat the water for a long time. If you live near the equator then you can lower your thermostat without the water getting too cold.

Do not put hot food directly into your fridge. Allow it to reach room temperature before placing it inside the fridge.

Thawing the food properly before you will cook will also save you power in cooking if you use an electric stove.

At the end of the day, every little thing you do, every action you take to reduce your electricity consumption adds up to a colossal saving at the end of the month and year. Combine that with millions of other people and you can start to see how important it is for each person to take action and do as much as possible to reduce our grid-fed energy needs.

As the price for energy increases, savvy homeowners should ensure that their homes are not completely reliant on the mainstream power grid.

By reducing your electricity dependence on the grid, you become part of a more sustainable and responsible global community of homeowners and enjoy significant electricity & cost savings at the same time.
