No water – for 6 weeks

About 3 000 households in Sedibeng and Geelboom near Kuruman in the Northern Cape have been without running water for six weeks.

Residents have become increasingly frustrated and have been using a nearby borehole and streams to fetch water for daily use, reports the SABC.

Meanwhile the local municipality and the water supplier are blaming one another and it is unclear who is responsible for fixing the problem.

Some villagers have to travel 15km to get water and often find it is of poor quality and not usable.

A municipal spokesperson has said infrastructure will be upgraded within three months and that clean drinking water will in the meantime be transported to communities in water tankers.

He appealed for residents to remain calm.
